The Fish Gate values:

Wise leadership and spiritual insight

We believe in both wise counsel of those gifted in that way coupled with spiritual insight. One is not superior to the other. The Biblical account of the first church council ended with “It seemed good to us and the Holy Spirit” (Acts 15: 28) is an excellent example of this principle.

Leadership and theological dialectic

Simply put, this means that leadership must be the result of vigorous interaction and discussion by people who do not all see the world in the same way. This necessitates team leadership, open and honest putting forward of opinion and openness to correction and critical analysis of ideas both practical and theological.

Authenticity

Real spirituality does not need to be forced. It involves taking responsibility for actions, admitting fault, receiving correction, having realistic goals, being secure in our identity and calling, avoiding pretence especially the confusion of false piety with Holiness – God looks to the heart (John 4:23-24) and over-spiritualising the faith in prayer, worship, scripture reading and the like. These are distinctive practises Christians do, but they are not more ‘spiritual’ than mowing the lawn.

Fun and Humour

Humour is a funny thing but we recognise that humour was God’s idea in the first place. Authentic spirituality includes spontaneous fun and laughter alongside serious reflection and true piety. BBQs, going to the beach and enjoyment of a good coffee are all gifts from God to be appreciated and savoured. God delights in our laughter and joy.
